How to Plant Wildflower Seed Paper

Planting your greet n' grow wildflower seed card is a simple task that can be done in just a few minutes once you have acquired just a few supplies.

Supplies required:

If you are planting indoors:

  1. Find a container - for wildflowers it will need to be at least 6-8 inches deep with drainage holes in the bottom.
  2. Potting mix - You don't need to be too picky here, just look for something good quality if possible.
  3. Last but not least, water!

If you are planting outdoors:

  1. Good quality soil or a mix of soil & compost. Better soil will give your seeds a higher chance to thrive but don't dwell on this - think of it as a plants diet. It doesn't need some super exclusive soil from the Sacred Valley. Likewise, think of plain sand or garbage as processed food to a plant - some may grow but you aren't setting it up for success in any way.

Now to the fun part.

Following the instructions below to plant your wildflower seed paper indoors. If you are looking to plant outdoors, Jump to outdoor planting section

  1. Fill the container with potting mix: Fill the container with a good quality potting mix, leaving about 1-2 inches of space at the top for watering.
  2. Sow the seeds: For best results, tear up the paper and spread evenly throughout the area, without overlapping. If you cannot bring yourself to tear your card up, you can alternatively plant it as a single piece.
  3. Cover the seeds: Either rake ⅛ to ¼ inch of soil evenly over the seeds or gently press the seeds this far into the potting mix with your fingertips. Be sure not to press them too deeply as all of these these species need light to germinate, so only a light covering of soil is necessary.
  4. Water the seeds: Water the container gently but thoroughly after sowing the seeds to settle the soil and help the seeds to germinate. Keep the potting mix moist but not waterlogged during the germination period.
  5. Care for the seedlings: You should start to see sprouts in 7-10 days. Once the seedlings emerge, water them regularly, but be careful not to overwater them.
  6. Enjoy your blooms! They should bloom in another 8-10 weeks. Don't forget to tag us in your photos on Instagram (@greetngrowcards).

Outdoor Planting:

  1. Ensure it is a suitable time to plant wildflowers in your area. Check that the last spring frost has passed and that the soil temperature is at least 10°C. Lower temperatures can result in poor germination or possibly none at all.
  2. Choose the right location: Choose a location with well-draining soil that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Remove any weeds, rocks or debris from the area.
  3. Prepare the soil: Loosen the soil to a depth of 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) with a garden fork or tiller. Add compost or organic matter to improve soil fertility and texture.
  4. Sow the seeds: For best results, tear up the paper and spread evenly throughout the area. If you cannot bring yourself to tear your card up, you can plant it as a single piece instead - the paper will take longer to break down using this approach.
  5. Cover the seeds: Gently rake the soil over the seeds to cover them to a depth of ⅛ -¼ inch. Be sure to not cover them too deeply as the seeds require light to germinate.
  6. Water the seeds: Water the area gently but thoroughly after sowing the seeds to settle the soil and help the seeds to germinate. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged during the germination period which will last 7-10 days. Continue to water them weekly after they begin sprouting.
  7. Enjoy your blossoming flowers! With proper care they should bloom in another 8-10 weeks.
